Alcala-Alcossebre Council ratifies the excellence of all the beaches in the municipality

Francisco Juan: “We regret that, after the excellent analyses which were made public all through the summer, municipal representatives are making irresponsible declarations which could cause serious harm to the local economy”

In view of information which has appeared recently as a result of a communication from the Municipal Socialist Group, in which doubt is cast on the quality of the water on the Las Fuentes beach, Alcala-Alcossebre Council wishes to send a calm message to the town’s population and the tourist sector to insist that the spillage episode which forced the closure of the beach in July 2017, has been completely resolved.  After the detection of the focus of contamination, inspection works began in the surroundings of Las Fuentes, extending to a much greater area both with regard to public infrastructures and private installations.  Afterwards, renewal works to the drainage were carried out in various places in the Las Fuentes surroundings.  All this work was coordinated, all the time, by the Council, the Dirección General del Agua of the Generalitat Valenciana, the EPSAR and the concessionaire company.  In May 2018, the General Manager of Agua had announced that all the analyses which were being carried out certified that the quality of the water was suitable and that possibly the focus of contamination had been due to a number of factors, making it complicated to localise it definitely.  Also, he insisted that this type of episode is not unusual in coastal towns.  In fact, various towns in the region suffered beach closures during this summer, whilst in Alcossebre there had been none.

In the case of Las Fuentes, during this summer, bathing water samplings had been taken between the 1st June and the 15th September, 62 in all, and were classified as “Excellent” in all cases.  These analyses were published on the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Climate Change web site and were also made public in the local Tourist Office.  Following these excellent results, the Department of Tourism has been working to again count on a blue flag for the Las Fuentes beach in summer 2019.

The Mayor Francisco Juan expressed his indignation and surprise because “having resolved the situation which caused so much harm to our businesses and our town, a year and a half later, the Socialist Party should try to revive a controversy which could create unnecessary alarm and harm to everyone”.
