The Eurovelo route will pass through the Valencian Community and will cover over 150 kilometres in Castellón province using a network of roads, lanes, cattle paths and cycling infrastructures, according to the route proposed by the Department.

The Generalitat is driving this project which was announced by the Public Works councillor, María José Salvador, in December and she defined it as the Mediterranean bicycle race as it will go through and connect the whole of Europe empowering sustainable mobility.

So, as was explained by the Transport and Mobility general manager, Carlos Domingo, of the 10 stages into which the route in the Community is divided, three pass through Castellón province.  The first starts in Sant Jordi and reaches Alcossebre-Alcala de Xivert, passing through Vinaròs, Benicarló and Peñíscola.  The second stage starts in Alcossebre and will pass through Torreblanca, Cabanes, Oropesa, Benicàssim and Castellón, from where the third stage which having passed through Almassora, Borriana, Nules, Moncofa, Xilxes, la Llosa and Almenara, will end in Sagunto, in the province of Valencia.

Poblado Ibérico del Puig de la Nau, the Peñíscola Castle, the natural parks of the Sierra de Irta, del Prat de Cabanes-Torreblanca and of the Desierto de las Palmas, el Clot de la Mare de Déu in Borriana, and the ponds in Nules and Almenara, are some of the points of greatest interest along the route through Castellón province.  For Carlos Domingo, this itinerary “is an opportunity for the municipalities through which it passes because it focuses attention on this type of tourism as an attraction displaying more of our territory”.

In the Valencian Community, the itinerary which has been agreed with the different administrations involved and which has been sent to the Eurovelo experts for their analysis, will cover over 500 kilometres and pass through 78 municipalities, some of which have been declared as Artistic Historical sites, four natural parks and will be seen by 2.4 million inhabitants without counting tourists and visitors.  In Castellón province alone, there are about 20,000 hotel places and about 20 camping sites.

It is believed that the first phase of the total project will be operational in 2020 and will involve investment of millions of euros.
