The second year of the Women’s Self Defence course organised by the Alcala-Alcossebre Local Police as one of the Council’s activities during March within the commemorations for the International Women’s Day, ended with outstandingly successful attendance.

The classes, given by Local Police officers specifically trained in this subject, were offered both in Alcalà and Alcossebre, and were aimed at women of all ages and physical conditions.  Their aim was to teach how to face up to any dangerous situations which they might encounter, like sexual aggression, violence or threatening behaviour.  The activities included learning the basic body defence movements and how to use every-day objects to defend oneself.  Added this year was a tatami mat so that the exercises could be carried out in a safe way and a cushioning suit, known as “Redman”, which softens the blows.

The Local Police Chief Inspector, Abel Serret, pointed out that “the great reception this course attracted last year, led us to increase the sessions this year from two days a week to three” and “the involvement and the good way the officers acted who were in charge of the course”.  On the part of the Local Police it had been observed that giving the training and drawing up a title meant that the participants had greater motivation and, due to the success, we shall defend continuing with the course.
