The new series of guided visits to the Xivert castle and the Santa Lucía Hermitage was announced on 15th June. Both sites are declared as assets of Cultural interest. The guided tours are organised by the Alcala-Alcossebre Culture Department. These visits have been tried out for several years and due to the good response and increase in visitors they are now being made more frequent. This year the series will start during the week commencing 24th June and will continue until 15th September. The visits are completely free and you do not have to register in advance to take part.
The acting Culture councillor, María Agut, emphasised that “our objective is to spread and take advantage of our cultural and historic wealth as a tourist attraction and, therefore, during the summer, we are increasing these guided visits to other tourist activities such as the “Heritage of the Templars” route”.
The castle guided tours will be every Wednesday and Friday, from 08.45 hours, starting from the car park which can be accessed by car from the centre of Alcala. During the visit, different archaeological remains found in the castle will be described and the different parts of the enclave relating to the different historical eras of which there are remains from the Iberian, Muslim and Templar eras. The visit ends at the Alcala Archaeological Museum Collection in the CESAL in Alcala, to give greater understanding of the importance of the remains found after the various excavation campaigns carried out under the supervision of the Provincial Diputación’s Archaeological Service.
Visits to the Santa Lucia Hermitage take place on Thursdays, Saturdays an Sundays, from 08.30h to 13.30h. The visit includes the Iberian remains in which, during the previous archaeological works, the remains of a silversmith workshop were found, demonstrating the importance of the site among Mediterranean businesses. The visit also includes the baroque chapel and, in the medium term, it will be completed with the Interpretation centre where there will be models on display and audio-visual material on the historical and archaeological wealth of the site.
The announcement ended with thanks to the local businesses which had cooperated with the last excavations campaign at the Santa Lucía Hermitage.
