Alcala-Alcossebre Council unanimously approved a new bylaw to assist students who travel by train to follow their studies in other towns by contributing 50% of the cost of the fare.  The measure is being adopted following the increase in the number of trains and the opening of the station, tremendously improving local rail communications compared with last year.

Mayor Francisco Juan said that “since November 2018 the frequency of the trains which stop at our station has increased, improving communication both with Castellón and Valencia and the northern area of the region.  Also, thanks to the arrangement negotiated by the Council with Adif, the station, which had been closed since 2001, has reopened and this means that users can buy their tickets in the station and make use of the waiting room and the toilets.  We have also made the station building completely accessible and Adif is completing the installation of the lift.  We think that this should increase the use of the train as an alternative to the car and students are one of the groups who use this transport the most”.

Students of any age will be able to benefit from this assistance who are registered in an official centre which authorises a title with a professional or academic value and which cannot be obtained in the municipality.  There will be a reduction of 50% in the cost of the ticket purchased, whether it be for a monthly pass or a pass for 10 journeys.

At the request of the municipal Compromis group, the bylaw will incorporate a section enabling it to be used for 50% of the cost of the bus fare for students residing in Alcossebre who have to catch the train.  The Socialist Party requested that “the assistance be extended to other transport and that it should not just be for students”.  From the governing group, they insisted that “we have various assistance in respect to various services which is why we continue working to increase them”.

Mayor Francisco Juan urged all the municipal groups to “join together to request the central Government to reduce the price of the trains as they do not yet cost the same as the Regional trains and this means that they are more expensive”.

Further details of how to apply for the reduction can be obtained from the Council offices.
