Alcala-Alcossebre Council is making the final preparations for the celebrations, on the 12th and 13th October, of the 7th Alcala de Xivert Hanging Tomato Fair. The Fair will open on Saturday, 12th October at 11.00h with over 70 stalls in the historic centre of Alcala throughout the weekend selling craft and locally produced products, led by the hanging tomatoes which can be obtained direct from the producers. At a gastronomic level, there will be “showcooking” set up in the Church square providing various gastronomic demonstrations during the morning and afternoon given by professional chefs on how to cook with these special tomatoes.
The fair includes three exhibitions: “Regirant la falsa” (Recognising the false) in the Casa de la Cultura organised by the Associació Amics de Mainhardt; an exhibition on olives in the Church square and an exhibition of bonsais organised by Lo Bonsai Gaspatxer, in the Casa Abadía. Also, planned specially for children, “Plant your own olive tree” and “Plastic is not fantastic” aimed at passing on values related to sustainability and respect for nature. Throughout the day in the car park situated next to the Church square, there will be workshops for traditional games and it will be possible to visit the bell tower and the parish church.
New this year, there will be an olive stone throwing competition – on Saturday at 18.30h – for children and for adults, competitions with prizes for making the best and the quickest allioli. Another new event will be a people’s dance, with music by the Montesol band, on Saturday from 23.00h in the Justo Zaragoza square. This will replace a fiesta party which had to be cancelled due to the bad weather during the Patronal Fiestas and has been moved to this festival.
Culture councillor, María Agut, said that “we are trying to maintain the delight which brought about the fair, with the craft and locally grown products stalls and very traditional scenery”. The fair will be completed with the Hanging Tomato Gastronomic
Days in various bars and restaurants in Alcala and Alcossebre.
