The Equality Department and the Alcala-Alcossebre Local Police are starting a new Women’s Self Defence Course which will start on 16th November in Alcossebre and 30th November in Alcala and will continue until April on Saturdays from 10.00am to 12.30pm. The course is for women over the age of 18 years and the sessions will be held in the Alcossebre CESAL and the Alcala CESAL. Registration, completely free, will begin on the 4th November, in the Alcala Council and the Alcossebre Municipal Offices.
This is the third year of this course, in which over 50 women took part in previous years. They received basic ideas on martial arts and how to take advantage of each woman’s capacities and every-day articles to defend themselves. The specialist Alcala-Alcossebre Local Police officers who give the classes, explain that “they are taught how to handle inevitable aggression, basic fist, hand or foot blows, basic dislocations or how to find painful spots for the aggressor”. They are also taught how to use the so-called “weapons of fortune”, i.e., everyday objects which can help us to repel aggression, such as a handbag, an umbrella or any thing you can put your hands on.
The Equality councillor, Marien Traver, pointed out that “this course not only teaches women to defend themselves but also provides an opportunity to conquer fears and overcome barriers which, unfortunately, we women continue to suffer”. Traver emphasised “the cooperation of the Alcala-Alcossebre Local Police, for setting up this type of initiative, and their promise that they will always deal with attending to matters related to gender-based violence and equality”
