Together with another seven councils in the region, Alcala-Alcossebre Council has renewed the agreement with the Asociación Ateneo de Daño Cerebral Maestrat to finance the programme to promote the autonomy and social integration which Ateneo has carried out in Benicarló, where it provides a service to affected people in towns in the north of the province.
Xaro Miralles, the Mayoress of Benicarló, chaired the event, accompanied by the chairperson of the body, Provi Casanova, and the regional mayors and councillors who support the project: Alcalà de Xivert, Peñíscola, Càlig, Sant Mateu, Sant Jordi, Cervera and Catí. The mayoress repeated support for Ateneo Maestrat and in the names of all the Councils gave assurance that “this agreement is important not only for its financial contribution, but because it makes the illness more visible and places value on the work of the association”.
The Mayor of Alcala-Alcossebre, Francisco Juan, said that “it is essential that, from the Council, we continue cooperating so that any resident, male or female, of our municipality who has suffered cerebral damage and needs the services and therapies which this association can provide, can make use of it”.
For her part, the chairwoman of Ateneo Maestrat, which provides services in the former Escuela de la Mar Irta buildings, thanked all the councils for their contributions and she announced that “for the next year we aim to introduce a programme of work integration and to be more ambitious in order to create a day centre for people with cerebral damage in the future”. A new stage with greater proximity.
After 10 years of being a delegation of the Castellón Asociación y Fundación de Daño Cerebral Adquirido Ateneo, this year we have started to act separately like an independent body, with the new title Asociación de Daño Cerebral Ateneu Maestrat. The aim, as recognised by the chairpwoman, “is the centralisation of forces, to create centres near the people who use us and not to depend on Castellón, so that in the end we are the ones who are nearest and know the needs best”.
Among other things, the project will continue offering Physiotherapy, Speech therapy, Neuropsychology, Psychosocial support, Workshops and transport Adapted for people who need it. The service, which began eleven years ago, currently looks after 34 users from towns throughout the area, with the support of specialist professionals who provide services.
The Escuela del la Mar buildings have three rooms for workshop and therapy activities, an office and other spaces shared with the Respite Unit for Alzheimer Sufferers, like the vestibule, gymnasium, toilets and the event hall.
