Alcala-Alcossebre Council is coordinating a day for volunteers to clean up the Alcossebre beaches, so that townspeople can cooperate in removing the debris, largely plastics, deposited after storm Gloria passed.  The first collection will be held on Saturday, 1st February, from 10am, on the Cargador beach, with the meeting point in the Roquer Martí car park.  The council will provide gloves and bags for those participating.  The aim is to be able to find and remove the plastic debris, in many cases small items, and be able to make a selective collection with the corresponding treatment and leave the beaches completely clean.

Next Friday, 7th February, 50 pupils from the Serra d’Irta Secondary School, as part of the VOLUNTARTA project, will hold a volunteers collection day, during which they will be given information by the council Environmental Department about the importance of keeping the shore free from rubbish, and about the harm which can result from plastic rubbish, about selective collection and the treatment of rubbish.

The Services and Environmental councillor, Juan Carlos Barceló, explained that “during the last few days we have continued cleaning and removing a large amount of rubbish which storm Gloria left in its path.  We ask residents to pardon us because it has not yet been possible to clear away all the debris but the sea front is extensive and we are trying to reach it all”.  Barceló emphasised that “fortunately, the majority of our citizens are understanding, appreciating the work the Council is doing and cooperating in the sustainability of our municipality”.
