Alcala-Alcossebre Council Culture Department is finalising its commencement of new archaeological excavations in the municipality.  Having completed the works planned at the Santa Lucía site, which brought many valuable finds to light, it is now planned to start new excavations in sites in Els Diablets, la Cova Pastrana and El Garrofer.  The culture councillor, María Agut, met with Gustau Aguilella, archaeologist from the Diputación Provincial Archaeological Service and Rafael Ronchera, director of the Col·lecció Museogràfica Gaspatxera, to evaluate where would be most interesting to start and establish the beginning of the processes and actions necessary, such as permits from other administrations.

Agut explained that “the 2020 municipal budget included a section with 5,500 euros to be able to start the works in a new site this year, aiming to continue recovering archaeological heritage which helps us to learn more about our local history”.  As happened in the archaeological campaigns in recent years with the Santa Lucia site, the Council contracts the archaeological teams who carry out the excavations and, with the cooperation of local businesses, they are provided with accommodation and maintenance.  The Diputación Provincial Archaeological Service gives technical advice on the development of the works.

Agut pointed out that “our municipality is very rich in archaeology and, on the Council’s part, we are continuing to work to bring more of this legacy to light and show it, through initiatives like the new Santa Lucía Visitors’ Centre, where the important wealth can be seen with regard to remains and discoveries which were made throughout recent years”.
