Alcala-Alcossebre Council regrets that the Female Castellón Cycling Tour by VCV has been cancelled due to lack of adequate financial support to guarantee the roll-out of the race, according to an official communication from the organisation.  Alcala-Alcossebre was going to host one of the stages of the race on Saturday, 29th February and had already set up the compulsory authorisations from the International Cyclist Union and involved bodies.  The two remaining stages were going to be held in the Onda and Benicàssim areas.  22 professional teams had already confirmed their attendance for the race with 132 cyclists taking part, including the outstanding Spanish World Tour Movistar Team and several international teams.

Mayor Francisco Juan regretted that “other bodies, like the Diputación Provincial, did not want to support a ladies’ cycling race in the province and, therefore the organisation had no option other than to cancel it”.  Juan urged that “he does not understand how the Diputación was not more aware of the visibility for female sport which the race was going to have and to give it the support needed for this first year”.  Besides the support for gender equality which the race would have meant, it also constituted an important tourist experience and attraction for the municipality as this type of competitions brings in crowds of cycling fans.
