Alcala celebrates its big Carnival night

Saturday was Alcala de Xivert’s big 2020 Carnival night, with a full programme which lasted throughout the day with events for all ages, in which participation and enthusiasm were the predominant notes.

The youngest children were the protagonists in the afternoon, with their Carnival King, Lluís Herráiz, at its head, presiding over the procession which passed through town’s streets.  Lluís, who will be 8 in March, wanted to be with his group Los Tremendos, “going out in their costumes through our town’s streets and making out neighbours dance and enjoy themselves”.

When the procession ended, the boys and girls taking part, enjoyed a delicious cup of hot chocolate.

Finally, the moment most longed for throughout the year arrived at nightfall, and the cold was no impediment for the entertainment, the fog wanted to join in and arose during the night, although this did not stop the enjoyment of the Carnival.  A big crowd watched the procession joining in the fiesta and looking at the costumes and the groups’ carefully prepared choreography.

The band Coco Loco opened the procession with Deluxe the first group to process through the local streets.   Their costumes were inspired by the Maleficent style in silver and black complete with horns, which resulted as being a tendency used by three different groups.

Secondly came CSR, with tropical colours and many frills and flounces, arriving at the sambódromo to a salsa rhythm.

Third in the procession was Som els que estem i estem el que som, with one of the night’s most original costumes, dragons full of sparkle, with greens, blues and pinks in their outfits.

They were followed in the fourth place by Carnavaleros 2020, a group which always has outstanding costumes, which they risked this year with their offer of giant pink spiders, announcing their arrival with a very popular children’s song.

Ara ve lo bo presented a costume with a blue tulle skirt, combined with a layer to represent the King at the bottom of the sea.

Those in the Cada 2x3 group arrived next looking very elegant and coordinated in white and black, with smart hats and very original epaulets.

Fusión also had horns in their outfit, gold on this occasion, combined with a red body, which gave them a demoniacal air, accompanying a large devil on their float, all shining a lot.

The La UTE group was another one which chose to include horns in their costume, but this time, bull’s horns in a hat brightly and colourfully decorated with feathers as a complement to the black and silver bodice with touches of gold.  They arrived to the sound of the tune Remember, to which the crowd there danced.

La Flapa is one of the Carnival regulars and this year chose an outfit in which the dazzling colour green dominated on the big carnival fiesta day.

Last in the procession was the De Tot un Poc group, to which this year’s queen, Clara Cerdán, belongs.  They formed the largest group this year, wearing a costume with caps, lights and a black cape.  The members of this group knelt down to let the queen pass, and radiated joy and energy in their entrance to the sambódromo.

The grand ball took the fiesta to the Espai d’Oci, lasting well into the early morning so that they could enjoy the atmosphere right to the end.

The last of the processions was held on Sunday, the procession for the funeral of the Rey don Carnal, which was attended by the Carnival king and queen.

But this was just a temporary farewell, as all the participants are already looking forward to the next weekend, when they will wear their outfits again through the streets of Alcossebre to close the carnival season for this year.
