On Friday, the Torreblanca Passion Cultural Association announced what the poster will be for this year’s 2020 performance, which will take place on the 9th April, Maundy Thursday, starting at 22:00 hours.

The authorship of this year’s poster was in the hands of Rubén de la Cruz and Berta Soldevila who were finalists in the poster competition held last year, with the theme of the 40 years of La Passió, so that last year the advertising poster went to the competition winner, the current year the second classified and in 2021 it will be the turn of the third finalist, as was explained by the vice-chairman of the association, Abel Segura.

Local artist Rubén de la Cruz, who at the time was also the local Culture councillor, emphasised his connections with La Passió.  He has played an active part in La Passió since he was 10 years old and he explained that “it is not the first time that I have made the poster for La Passió but La Passió is much more than a just poster for me - with months of rehearsals, the emotions of fighting to make everything turn out right, the nerves, seeing how the whole town is involved so that for one night a year Torreblanca is converted into Jerusalem”.

The poster shows a picture of the climb to Calvary, a moment which the artist considers to be one among the many outstanding moments and is representative of what La Passió is, because of the closeness of the public to the actors all along the calle San Cristóbal, “it is the most spectacular moment, which has the most emotion and which requires most work for the actors, because it represents 100% of what La Passió is”.

Carlos Casanova, the actor who plays Jesus in La Passió, who in his turn, has become chairman of the association this year as part of the major renovation the group has lived through, wanted to have a moment to remember Rafa Lloret, the actor who played Jesus in La Passió in Borriol who died recently and who was always a great friend to Torreblanca and its Passió.

Casanova described the enormous effort staging La Passió each year represents for all the participants, to drive forward such a gigantic project, “it means a lot, we are involved throughout the year, giving up hours of working and our lives, it is a great effort”.

He equally emphasised the new era which starts with the renewal of positions at the heart of the committee, “there are very important people who no longer serve on the committee”, but he expressed his hope that the new members will be able to reach the same height as their predecessors and continue “with the same enthusiasm as when they began”.

During the presentation event homage was paid to the people who have left the committee, Inma Segura, Ángela Segura, Jesús Vinuesa and Roser Balaguer, presenting them with a gift commemorating their input to La Passió.  On the new committee are Carlos Casanova Presidente), Abel Segura (Vicepresidente), Paula Obiol (Secretary), Vicent Marín (Treasurer), and members Rubén Fortuny, José Antonio García, Miriam Pañella, Manuel Salvador, Rubén de la Cruz, Juan Abel Segura, Néstor Navarro and Pepita Bort.

This renewal, which happened at the same time as renewing the statutes for the association,  aiming to introduce greater freshness to the project, as well as giving it a turn in its direction towards people, betting on strengthening its presence on social networks.

New this year will be some of the things which were planned to take place last year to mark the 40 years of La Passió and which could not be carried out as the performance had to be cancelled due to bad weather.  Thus, this year will have actors who played Jesus in the past Joan Simó and Abel Segura, who played some scenes, as well as the fond memory of Manolo Segura, the first Jesus in La Passió and driver of the founding of this performance, who will be present via a projection on Calvary.  As Abel Segura explained, this is a way of remembering and paying homage to all those who through the years have formed part of La Passió.

Also, as a demonstration of the friendship existing between the Torreblanca La Passió and la Passió per la trencà in Alcalà de Xivert, the Alcala actor, Cristian Mañez, will play the role of Barabbas in the next Maundy Thursday performance in Torreblanca.
