Castellón Airport is processing the construction of two aircraft maintenance hangars

The councillor stated that the facility had to be prepared for its reactivation, fixing safety protocols for users and employees

The project is one of the matters dealt with during the video-conference meeting held on Thursday, 30th April, with the councillor for Territorial Policy, Public Works and Sustainable Mobility, Arcadi España, María Pérez, the autonomous secretary for Tourism, Francesc Colomer, the general director of Ports, Airports and Coasts, Emili Obiol, the general director of Aerocas, Joan Serafí Bernat; and the territorial delegate for the Presidency of the Generality in Castellón, Adolf Sanmartín, to give continuity for the situation of the infrastructure in the current context of the COVID-19 crisis.

One of the requests, published on Thursday in the Diario Oficial of the Generalitat Valenciana (DOGV), came from the company Dédalo Aviación SL, with a project for premises measuring 400 sq. metres and an area of 300 metres square dedicated to the maintenance of aircraft.

The second was registered by an individual person to carry out a 300 square metre hangar with a 300 square metre area, aimed at parking and the maintenance of aircraft.

The Aerocas regulations set out that, when they receive proposals of this type, once analysed and accepted, they will be published so that any person or company can produce alternative offers.  There is now a 30-day period for the presentation of other projects.

Arcadi España has stated the importance of “working to focus the management of the airport on three aspects: continuity, boosting and diversification of the activity counting on the collaboration of the private sector and the administration, with the aim of converting Castellón Airport into a logistic and business hub which could go further than the tourist sector”.

It was also emphasised that the projects for the new hangars have arisen as a consequence of the important development of general aviation at the airport, an example of which is that three flying schools currently have bases in the infrastructure.

During the meeting the airport’s situation was dealt with.  It remains operational, although its activity has been substantially reduced as a consequence of the world paralysation of air traffic driven by COVID-19.

The regular routes which the airport operates are temporarily suspended, as is the training activity of the three flying schools.  On the other hand, the eCube company is functioning, dedicated to the parking and dismantling of aircraft.

Also, in recent weeks, Aerocas has managed the arrival of 18 planes to be parked for maintenance, which are temporarily out of service because of the sudden halt in flying.  In addition to these are nine others managed by the eCube company.

The councillor stated the importance of Castellón airport being prepared for when air traffic resumes, by establishing protocols to guarantee the safety and health of passengers and workers.
