The Council is considering pedestrianizing the centre of Alcossebre

Over thirty restaurant establishments have already asked to extend their terraces

[Img #78671]Alcala-Alcossebre Council already has a proposal to combine the safety of pedestrians and promote economic activity in commercial establishments, with the social distancing measures demanded by COVID-19.  Following a study of possible scenarios and how they would affect circulation and mobility for both people and vehicles, the Council is considering that the best option is to pedestrianize the central streets in Alcossebre, in effect the camino L’Atall and the calle Rench – in both cases from the calle Alcala to the plaza Constitución – and the calle Vistabella and calle Sant Benet.  This pedestrianization would entail modifying the traffic direction in the calle Alcala from the camino L’Atall up to the Avenida Valencia and the Avenida Valencia would be made into a one-way street, in the north-south direction.

With this modification to the movement, the aim is the increase the pedestrians’ transit through the centre of Alcossebre, which would benefit local businesses and restaurants.  At the same time, by channelling the pedestrians along the roads, the space for pedestrians to circulate is increased guaranteeing that residents, visitors and, in general, any person who is walking, can maintain safe distances.

It will also mean that the pavements will remain free to enable space to be ceded to the businesses which have requested an increase to the public space they occupy so that their terraces can also comply with the distancing measures.  In fact, the Council is processing more than 30 requests presented by local businesses to increase their occupation of the public way.

It is also planned that, as a result of the circulation changes and increasing the terraces, 20% of the current blue zone will have to be moved to the nearest places possible.

The necessary measures will be adopted to guarantee that new parking areas are prepared to facilitate moving from nearby areas and residents will be able to access their private parking space, even though they are in the pedestrian zone.

Mayor Francisco Juan emphasised that “we are in an extraordinary situation which demands extraordinary measures and we think that these changes can benefit everyone as now the most important thing is health and with these measures, we guarantee that all pedestrians will be able to respect the safe distance.  At the same time, we are looking for the measures to have a positive repercussion on the local economy”.

The proposal has been communicated to the establishments in the zone and have been made public so that both residents and business people and restaurateurs can make their contributions, before the 20th May, at participa@alcaladexivert.es, enabling the whole process to have the greatest participation.
