Alcala-Alcossebre Council now has the final proposal for providing safety for pedestrians with the business activity of commercial establishments and hostelry, as a precaution for the social distancing measures for COVID-19.  On the 14th May last, the council publicised a proposal which consisted of pedestrianizing the more central streets in Alcossebre - the camino L’Atall and the calle Rench – in both cases from the calle Alcala up to the plaza Constitución – and the calle Vistabella and calle Sant Benet.  This pedestrianisation will bring with it a modification to the traffic direction in the calle Alcala from the camino L’Atall up to the Avenida Valencia and the Avenida Valencia will be turned into a one-way street, in the north-south direction.  The Council opened participation to businesses and residents affected and received different suggestions and requests, above all those relative to enabling vehicles to pass both for loading and unloading goods as well as for people doing their shopping.  For this reason, private vehicles will be allowed to pass which are going to shop in businesses in the area, between 06.00 hours and 13.00 hours, and there will be between nine and ten parking spaces in the calle San Benet solely for this.

In the case of commercial vehicles loading and unloading, they will be authorised between 06.00 hours and 11.00 hours from Monday to Saturday.  Residents in the area who have a parking permit will receive a card authorising them to pass and they will be able to access it at any time, at reduced speed.  There will also be twenty more parking spaces in the Avenida Valencia and the Council is studying how to install a new 3,000 square metre car park in the calle Irta.  All these measures will come into force on the 19th June.

The Police and Tourism councillor, Selene Blázquez, assessed the situation as “we listened to most of the requests from establishments and residents in the area and we believe that we have arrived at a solution which can benefit everyone, on the one hand the businesses and, on the other hand, the terraces.  Also, making these streets completely pedestrianised every day from 13.00 hours will contribute to increasing the feeling of safety and will increase movement for residents and visitors”.

Other parallel measures which will be adopted to guarantee the adaptation to these modifications will be moving bins, eliminating use of the underground bins in the area with the hygiene in the spaces they occupy being guaranteed, with two collections per day.

It is planned that signs and posters pointing out these modifications will be put up in various places in the municipality in different languages.  Also, the areas for the terraces will be set out and the pavement will be marked to indicate the direction for pedestrian circulation.

“This new situation demands that everyone is flexible and makes an effort.  We guarantee that you can comply with social distancing with these measures and, at the same time, we are allowing financial activity to continue, both in the shops and in the bars, cafes and restaurants” Mayor Francisco Juan emphasised.
