Alcala-Alcossebre Council will continue the archaeological excavations within the municipality with a new campaign focussed on the Cova dels Diablets, an important prehistoric site situated in the centre of the Sierra d’Irta.  This work is being carried out in cooperation with the Castellón Diputación Archaeological Service, the Jaume I University and the Sierra d’Irta Natural Park.  The project is at the phase of being processed and approved for the corresponding administration permissions.  It has a double objective: on the one hand, to stop further deterioration from which the cavity has suffered during years with no excavations nor preventive measures, but also to evaluate the possibility of starting a new stage of investigation excavations at the site.  It is planned that the work could start in the autumn.

Culture councillor, María Agut, explained that “we are planning a sum of 5,500 euros to start work on the site this year, aiming to continue recuperating archaeological heritage which would help us to learn more about our local history”  As has happened with the Santa Lucia site during the archaeological campaigns in recent years, the Council contracts the team of archaeologists who carry out the excavations and, with the cooperation of local businesses, make accommodation and maintenance available.  The task of scientific and work management coordination is being carried out by the Diputación’s Archaeological Service the team led by the archaeologist Gustau Aguilella and by the Jaume I University.  Finally, all the work will be supervised and will be undertaken with the cooperation of the Sierra d’Irta Natural Park, as the site is situated in the centre of a natural park with the maximum level of environmental protection.

For her part, the provincial deputy, Ruth Sanz, emphasised that it is particularly pleasant for the Diputación to be able to support projects such as the excavations in the Cova dels Diablets “because our overall objective is to contribute to the dynamization of the towns and help them to give value to all the natural, artistic and cultural resources which they have at their disposal”.  And “we are doing it with our Archaeological Service, which has well-known prestige in the sector”.

An archaeological excavation carried out in 1998 established the importance of the Cova dels Diablets site for knowledge of the prehistoric in the Sierra d’Irta and the scientific community is in agreement with indicating that it is a witness of the ways of living and of the funereal customs of the human communities which have populated the Irta for more than 10,000 years.
