Alcala-Alcossebre will dedicate the month of October to the “hanging tomato” with gastronomic and tourism activities
Alcala-Alcossebre Council will dedicate October to carrying out various activities around its most iconic agricultural product, the “hanging tomato”, promoting it with gastronomy and tourist activities. Due to the health situation driven by COVID-19, the Fira de la Tomata de Penjar – of which this year’s would have been the eighth – cannot take place as its characteristics – stalls located in the historic centre and a large number of people – do not enable it to comply with the safety measures to prevent infection from the coronavirus.
However, the council is already working together with the local restaurants which will participate in the Gastronomic Days dedicated to the hanging tomato which, as a novelty, will be held every weekend from the 9th October until the 1st November.
Equally, the Culture and Tourism Departments are working on a programme of cultural and tourist activities and visits to cultural places such as the Santa Lucía Ethnological Information Centre as a complementary offer during the weekends when the gastronomic days are held.
“We are quite clear that although we cannot hold the Fira de la Tomata de Penjar due to the safety measures against COVID-19, we must continue to support two sectors which are key in our town, agricultural products and hospitality, with initiatives which could attract visitors to our town and promote and spread consumption of the hanging tomato”, Mayor Francisco Juan explained.
