The Tomato Fair, which would have been held for its eighth year, has doubtless been affected by the COVID-19 health context.  It meant that “it could not be held in the same way we all know” stated María Agut, “the stalls in the historic centre and the great flow of people do not allow us to comply with the safety measures to prevent the coronavirus infection”.

On the Council “we have worked to make our special product the protagonist for the whole month of October”.  “Every weekend from 9th of October to 1st November, 16 local restaurants will offer special menus dedicated to the “Hanging Tomato”, and this will be complemented with cultural and tourist activities so you can come and spend the day getting to know our heritage through organised visits for free” Agut commented.

In the programme which will begin on 9th October at 18.00 hours in the Alcala de Xivert Espai d’Oci there will be a Blues concert.  On the 10th October at 12.00 there will be a theatrical route “the Xivert Templars” which will be held in the Castle.

If you prefer walking, there will be two opportunities one on Sunday, 11th, at 09.00 hours with a 12.5 km route through the Sierra de Irta natural park and another on Saturday, 31st, a more “horrific” version, of 5km along the coves.

On the 9th October and Saturdays 17th, 24th and 31st at 11.00 hours, the special route of the Hanging Tomato, an option which will go through the streets in the centre of Alcala with special attention to its famous bell tower, ending with a tasting.

Another activity which will take place during these days is “the route of the Templar heritage” which will be on Sundays 11th, 18th and 25th October at 12.00 hours.

Finally, it will be possible to visit the church of St. John the Baptist, the Bell tower and the Santa Lucia information centre, as they will be open every weekend.

Councillor María Agut, finally, wanted to invite residents and visitors to enjoy these days, “as it is a good opportunity to get to know our town and our gastronomy”.
