Alcala-Alcossebre Council is asking the Provincial Coastal Service for a complete repair plan for the Alcossebre shore

Alcala-Alcossebre Council is asking the Provincial Coastal Service for a complete repair plan for the Alcossebre shore, to include the reconstruction of the Las Fuentes dike, the replacement of sand on the Cargador beach and the construction of breakwaters.

Francisco Juan: “We believe that global action by the Ministry should happen as soon as possible and that we should not wait any longer to carry out the essential improvements, always in a sustainable way but consolidating what is there already and putting in measures to prevent the decline of our coast”.

Mayor of Alcala-Alcossebre, Francisco Juan, has written to the Provincial Coastal Service requesting a Plan which would bring together various actions to develop the Alcossebre shore, with particular priority for the replacement of sand on beaches, the repair of the dike on the north breakwater of the Las Fuentes beach and considers the construction of breakwaters, as has happened in neighbouring municipalities, to prevent the constant erosion which is happening on the coast.  The tremendous damage suffered by Alcossebre’s coast due to storm Gloria last January, causing the level of the sea to reach the seafront promenade, are still visible in the reduction of sandy areas and the emergence of rocky areas.  “At that time, the Council acted with urgency, repairing walkways and clearing away the debris which accumulated on the beaches and paths. The Provincial Coastal Service repaired the wooden walkway between the Cargador and Romana beaches but the replacement of the sand and the reconstruction of the dike on the Las  Fuentes beach are still pending”, the Mayor reminded, insisting that “the tourism sector is key to the economy of our municipality and, for it to continue being well valued tourism for our beaches, we must offer our residents and visitors the best infrastructures”.

To quantify the storm damage regarding the area of the beach, measurements were taken of the sandy areas on all the beaches in the municipality and it was discovered that they had suffered a reduction of approximately 50% regarding the area, and of some 130 cms of sand depth.  This situation, together with the safety measures imposed by COVID-19, has meant that the Council has had to put in maximum effort this summer to prepare the beaches for use.

“We believe that global action by the Ministry should happen as soon as possible and that we should not have to wait longer to carry out the essential improvements, always in a sustainable way but consolidating what is there already and putting in measures to prevent the decline of our coast”, the Mayor concluded.
