The Guardia Civil arrested two men, believed to be the perpetrators of two tentative fraud crimes using a money con-trick. The men tried to commit the crimes in two Alcala de Xivert businesses, trying to cheat the proprietors, who did not recognise them as residents in the town, whilst they tried to exchange a bundle of five euro notes for higher value notes.
These facts were investigated by the local guardia civil officers, information and proofs were gathered which could lead them to the perpetrators of the illicit deals. As a result of the enquiries, the officers found a man inside a vehicle in a central square in the town, who was waiting for the arrival of the other man who at that time was inside a place, and at that precise moment was carrying out the con, trying to convince the owner of the place to exchange the notes.
From these facts the Guardia Civil proceeded to arrest the two men, aged 23 and 29 years, as the supposed authors of the two tentative con trick crimes, confiscating the 1,305 euros in cash they were carrying, obtained through carrying out other similar criminal acts.
The “note exchange” fraud
This tactic consists of asking in a business to exchange a large quantity of money which the fraudsters have in low value notes (normally 5 euros). The businesses usually agree to obtain change and this is the moment when the fraudsters take their chance to steal certain amounts and they do not hesitate to cash in the balance.
This criminal act is characterised by its itinerant character and the perpetrators do not usually reside in the areas where they are carrying out the exchanges. The task was dealt with by officers of the Alcala de Xivert Guardia Civil.
