Alcala-Alcossebre Council is coordinating intensifying actions to prevent agricultural activity becoming a focus of COVID-19 infection. After the information from the Health Department of the existence of a spike of 14 workers in Alcala, the Council has requested live information from the Public Health department and has clarified that this spike originated in a case detected on the 5th December and that possible contacts have been followed up from that time, both at work and socially, with a total of 14 positive cases. It does not include, in any of the cases, the 14 positive cases which appeared this week in a local company. In any case, taking into account the rise in cases in the municipality and the fact that the greater number of detected cases are related to agricultural activity, as confirmed by Public Health, on 18th December there were several meetings in the Council to coordinate a control team for the agricultural sector.
Local Police and Guardia Civil controls will be intensified in the places where there is a concentration of agricultural workers as well as in the agricultural workplaces, to guarantee that safety measures (using masks, distance, etc.) are being respected. There has also been a meeting with senior representatives from local businesses in the agricultural sector to inform them of the measures and to coordinate control actions by the Local Police and the Guardia Civil in harvesting, warehouse entrances and exits, inside vehicles, and meeting places during the breaks, etc. The Council will send the petition from companies asking for confirmation tests to the Health Department, when those testing positive return to their jobs and better follow-up for contacts of those testing positive.
To intensify the measures, given the high mobility of workers in the agricultural sector, they have written to the sub-delegate of the Government about the need to carry out controls at the provincial and autonomous level.
“It is clear that both the Council and the companies themselves are taking all the measures which are within their capabilities but it is necessary to carry out important control of people who prove positive and their contacts and that all safety measures are taken” the Mayor explained.
Following the safety measures, the Local Police and Guardia Civil are carrying out continuous controls in establishments and meeting spaces, to ensure compliance with all the measures and are imposing fines in the cases of non-compliance. Also, both the Local Police and the Health Department are in contact with the representatives of the affected groups so that they have all the information concerning safety measures and can maximise them, above all that they should respect self-isolation in positive cases and their contacts.
