Alcala-Alcossebre Council Equality Department has prepared the programme dedicated to commemorating the 8th March, International Women’s Day, marked by actions promoting equality and feminine empowerment, among different sectors of the population, above all the very young and teenagers.  One of the principal actions is setting up the new “Points for equality” in the Municipal Libraries in Alcala and Alcossebre, in both of which different publications will be available, books and short stories, so that anyone interested can get advice from them or borrow them.  Equality councillor, Melina Fradejas, pointed out that “the publications are aimed at people of all ages, from the youngest to the adult public, so that through reading and advice we can work on equality and coeducation in different life spheres”.

Fradejas explained that “because of the health situation we are not allowed to carry out events for large groups of people, so we have bet on different initiatives online which are held from the educational centres, as we believe that it is a good option to promote equality and awareness in the new generations about the fight for gender equality and how the role of women in our society has continued advancing, in its different facets”.

The programme of events starts on 4th March, with the workshop and discussion on “Of works and people” presented by the Fundación Isonomia in the CEIP La Mola and CEIP Lo Campanar, for pupils in Primary year 4.  On Monday 8th March, International Women’s Day, in the IES Serra d’Irta and for pupils in year 1 of the Bachillerato, the documentary “Invisible Champions” will be shown to visualise the role of women in sport.  The event will be attended virtually by the town’s sportswomen.  There will also be a virtual reading of the Women’s Day Manifesto, which can be followed via social media, web and the Council’s Youtube channel.  On Tuesday 9th March, in the IES Serra d’Irta, there will be a workshop “Together is better” also related to the empowerment of women through sport.

The Department is also favouring the existence of service points for women victims of domestic violence so that staff in the town’s pharmacies are being trained with the aim of converting these establishments into permanent “Violet Points” against domestic violence.  The online training for this group, led by the 24-hour Women’s Centre, has also been included in the International Women’s Day programming.
