Alcala-Alcossebre adapts its road signs to reduce speed in urban streets

Five new luminous signs will be installed in the accesses to the town and Las Fuentes road which will operate with solar energy and incorporate messages in Spanish, Valencian and English

[Img #82103]Driven by the DGT, Alcala-Alcossebre Council has renewed all the vehicle speed limit road signs at the town’s accesses, adapting them to come into force on 11th May.   A total of five new luminous signs will be installed this week, showing the established speed limit at the town’s accesses and the Las Fuentes road.  These signs are totally energy effective as they function with solar energy and show text messages in Spanish, Valencian and English.

Reducing speed in town streets is fundamental in the new mobility and road safety policies in towns and the need to regulate vehicles living-together such as cars, motorbikes, bikes, vehicles for the disabled, etc. with the pedestrians.  The new regulation sets a speed limit of 20 km/h with a single lane and 30 km/h along a two-way street.  Rural roads maintain the existing speed limit of 40 km/h.

Local Police Chief Inspector, Abel Serret, explained that “this speed reduction corresponds with the policy already imposed by the council to limit the speed in the town’s main roads such as the paseo Héroes de Marruecos and a large section of the camino L’Atall, favouring a positive dynamic to reduce the number of serious traffic accidents”.

Mayor Francisco Juan insisted that “it is our aim to implant a policy of sustainable mobility, in which use of a bicycle is given priority.  We are demonstrating this with actions such as the preparation of a cycle track linking the north and south access to Alcala and the new pedestrian and cycle-track along the Las Fuentes road.  We are betting on having a Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan which reflects all these dynamics and are applying this measure to reduce speed along town streets is included in this type of policy”.
