Alcala-Alcossebre Council has taken charge of the work which has started on building new public toilets in the Santa Lucia hermitage environment, with the purpose of providing the necessary hygienic and healthy conditions in the area. Besides being a place where religious celebrations have always been held, given the nature of the hermitage, the area has become an important focus of attraction for visitors, given its patrimonial, natural and historic attraction, increased by municipal actions carried out in recent years, such as the construction of the panoramic viewpoint and the Ethnological Interpretation Centre, as well as organising guided visits, holding concerts, etc.
The installation will have two prefabricated bathrooms – one of them adapted for disabled users – with a total area of 5.5m and an adjacent water tank and is being situated on a sloping area, close to the hermitage. Placing it in a sloping area avoids any visual impact on the hermitage and the archaeological site. Also, materials are being used for the construction which blend in with the environment, such as wood and stone, to make a masonry wall very similar to that which already exists around the viewpoint. The work has the compulsory authorisations from the Culture and Heritage General Management and the Sierra d’Irta Natural Park and the corresponding archaeological work to preserve any remaining traces in the space where the public toilets will be situated.
The council has awarded the work to a local construction company for an amount of 29,750 euros, with a two-week timescale for carrying it out.
“With this action, we are providing the area with public services for the ever-increasing number of visitors. Without doubt this will be an important improvement, when organising any event or visiting”, Mayor Francisco Juan explained.
