The Guardia Civil has arrested two women, mother and daughter from Benicarló, who were passing themselves off as Tarot card readers to obtain large quantities of money, and were the suspected authors of crimes of extortion and falsification of a public document in Alcala de Xivert.

Modus Operandi

The detainees used a modus operandi by winning the confidence of their victims and offering fortune telling services and Tarot readings through the 806 telephone lines, to help them in their personal life through reading their fortunes in the type of Tarot cards.  During these telephone meetings the alleged authors sold them items and objects to perform so called magic, presenting them with fake invoices with a high cost which those affected refused to pay.

Seeing that the victims were not making the payments, they then threatened legal reprisals, choosing fake judicial documents which were sent by post to their homes to extort the money and oblige them to pay an amount to avoid embargos on their properties.  Once the large amount was paid in, the detainees went to a bank branch to withdraw the money.

Investigation

The Guardia Civil learned the identity of a victim resident in Barcelona, from whom they had demanded in total 78,000 euros for items purchased from the Tarot world and with the aim of giving a solution to the problems they might have, after making various payments which amounted to 52,000 euros, she refused to pay more money, after this the threats started.  Later, they sent a fake judicial document in which they warned of payments of fines and embargos for a value of 30,000 euros.  The Guardia Civil officers carried out numerous investigations in which they were able to find out that the fake fortune tellers travelled around the bank branches in the Baix Maestrat area to withdraw the money resulting from the illicit deals in cash.  The officers set up teams to watch and follow them in the area which resulted in the identification of the two women of 76 and 54 years of age, who were leaving a bank carrying hidden 30,000 euros in cash in a plastic bag obtained from the criminal act, which was recovered and posts for judicial disposition.  In the development of the investigations, the Guardia Civil proved that the mother already had three search warrants out for her arrest and prison sentences from the Judges in Pamplona, Valencia and Barcelona and a warrant for arrest and appearance before a Judge in Soria, all of them for crimes of extortion.

Later the Guardia Civil officers carried out two duly authorised home searches in Benicarlo, recovering various documentation which proved the involvement of both women in the extortion crimes and fake documentation.  The two women detained together with the procedures obtained were placed at the disposition of the Judge’s Court in Vinaroz who decreed that the mother should be sent to prison.  The action was carried out by officers from the Alcala de Xivert Guardia Civil Headquarters.
