Alcala-Alcossebre Council requests Costas to repair all the damage caused by storm Filomena on the coast

The Provincial Coastal Service will soon repair the walkway giving access to the Romana beach but the council is asking that they also repair the breakwater on the Las Fuentes beach and the San Miguel river surroundings

Mayor Francisco Juan and Services councillor, Juan Carlos Barceló, had a meeting on 24th May with technicians from the Provincial Coastal Service to finalise the forthcoming start of work to repair the Romana beach access walkway, which was damaged during storm Filomena last January.  Juan explained that “we have held several meetings requesting the urgent repairs and they have told us that the work will begin shortly and that it would be completed by mid-June”.  Guaranteeing the use of the walkway is essential as it is one of the principal accesses to the beach and the path which leads to the area suitable for disabled people.

There are still other areas which were also damaged during the storm like the Las Fuentes beach breakwater and the L’Atall road, in the area of the San Miguel river mouth.  “We hope that, finally, the Ministry will authorise the provision of the finance needed so that these repairs can be carried out and that our shore will be in the best condition”, the Mayor said.

It should be remembered that some weeks ago, the Mayor wrote to the General Management of the Ecological Transition Ministry to request that they take into account that the new European Funds for Recovery can be used for regeneration actions and protection of the coast which includes the coast of Alcossebre.  “To make good use of these European funds in a global action for our coasts could mean a historic opportunity to preserve our coast, which would be the definitive solution to the continuing deterioration of our coast and avoid having to act each year by repeatedly repairing infrastructures, which means a constant waste of financial and material resources”, he emphasised.
