Six residents from Alcala de Xivert received recognition on 3rd June in the event ‘Construint Memoria’ organised by the Department of Participation, Transparency Cooperation and Democratic Quality held in Vinaròs to honour the memory of the 36 inhabitants of the Baix Maestrat victims of the Holocaust. Melina Fradejas, the councillor for Social Welfare and Equality, representing the council and relations of the victims, received a Taulell de la Memòria from councillor Rosa Perez Garijo.
Juan Beltrán Ebrí, Mariano Añó Juan, Antonio Sospedra Herrera, Joaquín Galarza García, Manuel Ávila Arnau and José Martorell Calduch were interned in the Mauthasen concentration camp between August 1940 and December 1941. Only Juan Beltrán Ebrí was able to survive until the liberation of the camp on 5th May 1945. The remaining five died before the camp could be liberated.
Councillor Melina Fradejas emphasised that “Alcala-Alcossebre Council joins in the recognition of these victims. It has been an honour to be able to collect these awards which rescue these residents of our municipality who fought for liberty and the democratic values from anonymity”.
