Alcala-Alcossebre Council Culture Department is resuming the guided visits to the Xivert castle and the Santa Lucía hermitage from the 23rd June to the 12th September. Both are Cultural Interest Properties. The visits are free and it is not necessary to book in advance. You just have to come to the meeting point in the castle car park and entrance to the Santa Lucía hermitage to participate. The activities will have all the protocols included against COVID-19.
These visits, which have taken place every summer for nine years, have seen an important increase in the number of people attending, due to the growing interest in the heritage and the different actions to improve and promote both the castle and the hermitage.
Culture councillor, María Agut, reminded that “to spread and promote our heritage is essential to make it one more resource when encouraging visits to our locality and for people who spend the summer in our municipality to have an alternative cultural activity, with all the facilities”.
In the case of the castle, the visits are every Wednesday and Friday, from 08.45 hours, from the car park, which can be reached by car from the town centre of Alcala. During the visit, different archaeological remains found in the castle will be described and different points of the enclave will be visited related to the different historical epochs of which remains are conserved such as the Iberian, Muslim or Templar. The visit ends in the Colección Museográfica de Arqueología Gaspatxera, which is in the CESAL in Alcalà, to understand the importance of the remains discovered following the different excavation campaigns carried out under the supervision of the Servei d’Arqueologia de la Diputación Provincial.
Visits to the Santa Lucía Hermitage take place on Thursdays. Saturdays and Sundays, from 09.00h to 13.30h. The visit includes learning about the remains from the existing Iberian site, visiting the baroque chapel and the Centro de Interpretación Etnológica-CIE in which are exhibited models and audio-visual material about the historic and archaeological wealth of the site. Precisely, the Ethnological Information Centre (opened in 2019) is becoming a much-visited resource. During the last three months, 953 people have visited it, achieving a very notable average of 48 people per day during April, coinciding with Holy Week.
