The Alcala de Xivert-Alcossebre PSPV-PSOE leader, Sara Cucala, denounces the serious deficiencies of the lifeguard service on the municipality’s beaches. The socialist explains that “throughout the summer on many days there have been fewer lifeguards than those specified in the document and a lack of material both for the workers and to attend to the users and to ensure the correct operation of the surveillance”.
Since the start of the summer season, the company responsible for the lifesaving on the Alcala de Xivert-Alcossebre beaches has notched up many light and serious misdemeanours, which put the safety of the users in danger as well as the workers, Cucala complains. “As well as the shortage of lifeguards, some days on the Moro beach there was no spinal board in the event that someone might have needed one”, the leader commented.
As if this was not enough, Sara Cucala adds, “we recorded that sometimes there was no walkie-talkie and the lifeguards were obliged to use their personal mobiles to be able to communicate between themselves, the workers had no PPE to protect themselves and the company only provided four surgical masks to last them the whole summer”.
The Municipal Socialist Group denounces that “the wharfage for the lifeguard service vessel does not comply with the regulation, in fact, on 26th July the boat slipped off the buoy, due to a fierce burst of waves and left at top speed which could have caused very serious harm to the bathers on the beach. The company’s solution was to make the boss responsible and fire him”. It must be remembered that last summer the municipality’s socialist spokesperson, Joan Ronchera, denounced the irregularities in the service, the complaint ended in punitive action which the spokesperson described as “a ridiculous fine”.
