On 12th October, the Alcala-Alcossebre councillors for Culture and Tourism, María Agut and Selene Blázquez, announced this year’s programme for “October, Month of the Hanging Tomato”: a wide range of cultural, tourist and gastronomic activities based on the most iconic local agricultural product, taking place from the 9th October to the 1st November.  As happened last year, the health situation has prevented holding the traditional Hanging Tomato Fair although “we don’t want our fair to lose its identity and to adapt to the health measures would have meant changing the location or changing the programme” María Agut explained.

The main ‘dish’ of the initiative are the Gastronomic Days with menus based on the hanging tomato in which 11 local restaurants are participating.  Also, anyone interested in obtaining hanging tomatoes can buy them direct from these restaurants by ordering them when making your reservation.  You can obtain three different containers with different quantities of the produce.  Tourism councillor, Selene Blázquez, emphasised “the great gastronomic level of our municipality and the involvement of the local businesses”.

The key cultural activities began on 9th October, with the traditional music concert performed by the Branca Duet in the Alcala Espai d’Oci.  On Tuesday 12th October, the Resistencia Theatre company performed “L’arxipèlag dels gegants”, as part of the Provincial Cultural Circuit; on Saturday, 16th October, there was a concert “Cien por Cien”, with versions of Morat, Maluma and Álvaro de Luna among others, in the Alcala Espai d’Oci and on Saturday, 23rd October, another concert, in this case of classical music “From Mozart to Brahms”, performed by Laura Máñez and the Nel Cuore quartet.  On Saturday 30th October, there will be a performance of “Luisa Fernanda” by the Opera Gourmet group in the Espai d’Oci.  All these performances are free and with seats available until all are taken.

The programme will completed with tourism activities such as walking routes, gastronomic routes with hanging tomato tastings, the “Templars Inheritance” route to learn about the historic heritage of Alcala, and the new route “The more poetic inheritance”.  To take part, you must sign up in the Tourist Information Office by phoning 964 412 205.
