Alcossebre’s Open-air Library just keeps on growing
The Open-air Library in Alcossebre, one of the facilities provided by the town which is used every year by dozens of users, is once again a great success this summer.
It is organised by the Culture Department of Alcala de Xivert Council, and enables people to read all types of publications completely free, peacefully seated by the sea. At the beginning of July, it was already being used by a large number of people.
The early figures showed that nearly three hundred people a day were using the municipal reading facility, which costs no-one anything.
It is open in the mornings and evenings, from 10 to 14 hours and from 18.30 to 23.30, and the Vistalegre provides the perfect background to enjoy reading for a while.
The library has a wide bibliographical range, with books for everyone. There are also all types of daily newspapers available for readers. There are also different publications available referring to the history of Alcala and Alcossebre.
Among other attractions, the Open-air Library also makes press available from all the Spanish provinces. In the section for foreigners, there are the most popular newspapers from England, Germany and France and this is one of the services most in demand. Also books can be reserved. This means that the publications are lent for the period they are needed.
For the local Council, it is very satisfying to see how well this reading facility operates and is used by an increasing number of people each summer. Mayor Francisco Juan explains that “it really is a great attraction for people to be able to enjoy a good book seated scarcely ten metres away from the sea”. In the mayor’s opinion, this is one of the keys to the success of this municipal reading service, although he also adds that “every day we try to provide new and improved facilities for our residents and visitors. This is one of them”.
