Alcossebre en Cant – I Lirical Song Festival

Under the Townhall´s sponsorship on Sunday, July 29th, the first concert within the Lirical Song Festival took place at the Alcossebre Pensioners´Centre Sant Benet.
A varied programme of duos and arias, taken from operas and zarzuelas and presented by the soprano Emilia Onrubia, the mezzosoprano Joana Thomé and the pianist Juan Carlos Cornelles whose surname indicates his Alcala origin. Lovely and quite known classic music, presented by real artists, my favourite one being the wonderful, impeccable mezzo with her great performing talents. The soprano´s voice was really amazing, very powerful, but sometimes a bit too powerful for the low ceiling of the Sala Multiusos..
Unfortunately I couldn t attend the second concert, Vivaldi´s Four Seasons, but I have been told that it was great and that there was a big audience
The third concert was presented by two pianists, the duo Gimeno y Solsona, classic music and sound tracks, mixed up with comical scenes: Suddenly, in the middle of a Four Hands, a mobile sounded and I thought „tipical“; but it was one of the pianists who was told about the birth of .... 7 little cats. There was a sketch about two cowboys fighting a duel; the dying one´s last wish was to fly from Castellon airport; both pianists ended up playing piano with 4 pistols; pasodoble music accompanied a strange torero´s movements, and sound tracks were played while well known film scenes were projected on the wall, where, suddenly, the pianists could be seen. At the end, there was a big applause for the duo and their great musical talents.
The fourth and last concert was about the „lied“, that typical romantic German song, presented by the pianist Juan Carlos Cornelles and the mezzosoprano Joana Thomé. Among well known songs such as the Trout, there were lots of unknown ones, mostly by Schubert and Schumann, but also Brahms and Richard Strauß. Beautiful music performed, once more, by great artists. Spanish translation was projected on the wall – by the way, Joana Thomé s German was perfect.
The only inconvenience was the suffocating heat in the room. Why did they put air condition just in the ground floor room and not in the one upstairs? Well, as I was told by the Mayor who had come to the last concert as he hadn´t been able to come to the first, that they thought the multi functional room wouldn´t be used in summer!!!
In the meantime budgets for air condition have been asked for. So let´s hope that next year we´ll enjoy nice temperature. Let´s hope, too, that there will be a bigger audience – publicity hasn´t been the best – because I am convinced that there is a large number of classic music lovers in Alcossebre, Alcala und surroundings.
There were still some more musical activities such as a workshop for small children or about vocal technics, directed by Joana Thomé and assisted by Juan Carlos Cornelles, whose pupils emphasized her excellent teaching, her great patience and her endless working capacity.
A lovely festival which is to be praised because of the high musical level and the unselfish work of the musicians and their helpers.
The funds raised by the small 2 euros entrance fee will go to FEDER, the Rare Diseases Association.
Congratulations and see you again next year
