With a record number of participants, the final sports event of the year was a wonderful fiesta.

Local runner José Angel Ebrí carried off the prize by winning the most popular Alcala San Silvestre race in living memory. The ‘Amiucs de les /Curses Populars’, a newly formed group in the town, organised the final sports event of the year to perfection.
Over a hundred people took part and started the race which was a fiesta, lacking nothing – not even the traditional turkey, which those taking part with the most original fancy dress carried off.
From a purely sports point of view, José Angel Ebrí dominated the race with authority and the only ones who could keep up with him were Raúl Añó and Paco Vinuesa who were second and third in the plaza Juan Vilanova. Among the ladies, 13-years old María Herrera, demonstrated all her power, carrying off the trophy in the race. Gema Ebrí and Raquel Cherta, in that order, took the other podium places for the San Silvestre ladies.
The great star of the race was good humour - as the participants appeared at the start line dressed up in all sorts of fancy dress - chickens, birds, lions, geese, Romans and the traditional Father Christmases. The San Silvestre race was a trail of diversion with the public also having a good time applauding the runners.
Francisco Juan echoed the council’s satisfaction at the success of the event: “It is fantastic to send out the year in this way. The organisation, the runners and the public have had a wonderful time achieving for everyone a San Suilvestre to remember”. Joanba Herrera also wanted to thank all those who took part: “The real ‘culprits’ of the success of this year are the runners and their wish to make it a success”. The head of the Sports Department also announced that in the next few days all the pictures taken of the San Silvestre race will be available to residents on the Council’s web page. “It is a way of being able to keep a good record of your participation in the event and a picture is worth a thousand words”.
